WORLD GIRAFFE DAY!!

Woohoo- it’s World Giraffe Day and we are so excited! We love the tallest mammal on earth! They’re lanky, graceful and have funny horn like things on their heads! Come learn some fun stuff about giraffes with us and tell us why you love them!

  • All giraffes live in Africa, in desert or savannas.
  • Giraffes can grow up to 19ft tall.
  • Their tongues are 21″ long.
  • They have ossicones on their heads. These ossicones are actually part of the skull.
  • Giraffes are herbivores and eat all throughout the day.
  • A giraffe’s heart is the size of a basketball.
  • Giraffes can run up to 35 miles per hour.
  • Giraffes have the same number of vertebrae in their neck as do humans- 7!
  •  A giraffe’s foot is the size of a dinner plate.

Giraffes are such special creatures. Many people are drawn to them; maybe it’s the spots, maybe the knobby knees or maybe it’s the ossicones. WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY!

WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY!

While the computer was down at HQs we missed World Sea Turtle Day! We so love these amazing reptiles that we could pass up a time to celebrate them and teach you some fun facts! We have seen 2 species in the wild- green sea turtles in the Caribbean and a Leatherback female laying her eggs on an island near Indonesia.

  • There are seven species of sea turtles: loggerhead, green, leatherback, flatback, Kemp’s ridley, Olive’s ridley, hawksbill.
  • Six out of the seven of these are threatened or endangered.
  • Sea turtles can not pull their head or limbs into their shells.
  • Sea turtles spend their whole lives in the ocean, except when the female comes ashore to lay her eggs.
  • Sea turtles are found in oceans all around the world.
  • Sea turtles eat everything from algae and grass to jellyfish and shellfish.
  • Sea turtles do not have teeth.
  • Their sizes range from 600 lbs to 1,300 lbs.

Sea turtles are being affected by humans. Their often mistake trash for food. The babies get distracted by lights on the beach as they head towards the ocean. And turtles are often hit by boats. We can help our sea turtle friends by making sure our trash never enters the ocean or is left on the beaches. If you live where there may be nests, turn your lights off at night. We’re BACK!! Our computer here at HQs is working like new! Whew!  It is very hard to type with hooves and a trunk as it is, so when it started acting crazy we were in big trouble! Luckily, it was fixed in time for Edmond’s birthday! We thought we’d share some fun facts about our favorite horse and horses in general and then you can color your own Edmond!   • We can sleep laying down or standing up!
  • We can see 360 degrees around us!
  • We can reach speeds up to 27 mph.
  • There are around 60 million of us on the earth!
  • We’re herbivores.
  • We have the largest eye of any land mammal- yes my eyes are bigger than Ellie’s!
  • We are related to rhinos and tapirs!

We horses come in large breeds to very small miniature sizes. We have worked and helped humans for thousands of years. Horses are very special and if you have one in your life, count yourself as very lucky! I’m going to enjoy some apple pie and dancing for my birthday, come join me! IT Troubles

SCIENCE WORD OF THE WEEK!

Welcome back to class everyone! We hope you celebrated World’s Oceans Day with Ellie and Edmond yesterday! If not, make sure you check out the post and the coloring sheet! Today’s word is a big one- so let’s get ready to learn!

Today’s word is Biology: the study of living things. This includes all five kingdoms of living things on our planet. Those are animals, plants, fungus, protista (single and mutilcellular algae and flagella and monera (single and colonial bacteria and blue-green algae). Whew that is a mouth full. Biologists- the scientist who study living things specialize in all of these different kingdoms. Some biologist study one kind of fungus or just one species of animal, where others study whole groups! Biology is one of the best kinds of sciences out there!  Do any of our students want to be biologist?

WORLD OCEANS DAY- TRASH!!!!

WORLD’S OCEANS DAY- TRASH!!

Today we’re talking trash! That’s right- we’re talking about the trash that you humans throw into our oceans! It’s World’s Oceans Day today! We want to celebrate the giant wonderful habitat that covers 70% of our precious planet! The great vast oceans are home to many beautiful, amazing, wild and alien creatures; many of whom have yet to be discovered. Our oceans produce most of the oxygen that we all breath- animals and humans alike!

It’s time we all learn to appreciate and love the oceans and the creatures that live there! Unfortunately, our oceans have become a place to leave trash :(. This trash affects not just the animals, but humans too. So this World’s Oceans Day we’re sharing some trash facts from the Ocean Conservancy and ways you can help! Plus we have a great coloring sheet for you! Remember, we all share this great planet and it’s our responsibility to keep it clean!

Day 36- Secretary Bird

We woke up this morning at camp and saw these amazing cool birds running around in the cool temperatures. We quickly ran to our guide book and realized we were watching the magnificent secretary bird.  We watch them all morning. These long legged birds are graceful and funny and so interesting…

 

Range/Habitat: Sub-Saharan Africa/grasslands, desert and savannahs

Diet: Carnivore: snakes, large insects, frogs, lizards and small mammals

Height/Weight: 4 ½ ft-5ft/ 5 ½ – 10lb

Conservation Status: Common

  • Secretary birds are diurnal (they’re active during the day) and nests in Acacia trees at night.
  • They have long powerful legs that they use for striking prey.
  • It’s thought that they were named after English secretaries because the crests on their heads look like quills that secretaries used to write with, but it’s now thought that is it comes from an Arabic word meaning “hunter bird”.
  • Secretary birds walk more than they fly. They can walk up to 15 miles a day in search of food.
  • It is admired in Africa for its hunting skills, especially its ability to kill venomous snakes.
  • It’s even part of the Coat of Arms for South Africa.

The Secretary bird is one excellent predator! We love a bird that walks all day (elephants walk lots too).

While we were bird watching Africa we spotted this large animal hiding in the trees! Can you guess who we spotted looking over the savannas?

  • They have white spots on the back of their ears.
