CINCO DE RHINO!
CINCO DE RHINO!
Happy May 5th, or as we like to call it- Cinco De Rhino! We’re celebrating these amazing animals today and hopefully bringing some awareness to their plight in the wild.
RHINO FUN FACTS:
- There are 5 species of rhinos, the Black Rhino, the White Rhino (the African species), the Northern India Rhino, the Sumatran Rhino and the Javan Rhino (the Asian species).
- Rhinoceros is Greek for nose and horn!
- All rhinos have poor eyesight.
- White rhinos have a large broad mouth for grazing grass.
- Black rhinos have a narrow prehensile lip to help them grasp leaves.
- Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same protein that makes up your hair and fingernails.
- Rhinos’ ears can move and rotate independently of each other. This adaptation helps the rhino hear.
- Rhinos are herbivores.
- The Sumatran Rhino is the smallest rhino weighing around 1,700 lbs and the White rhino is the largest weighing around 5,000 lbs.
- A group of rhinos is called a crash!
- All rhinos are endangered. Many organizations, like World Wildlife Fund and Saving Rhinos are working very hard to save and protect these amazing animals. Check them out and see how you can help!

SCIENCE WORD OF THE WEEK!
Welcome back to class everyone! We had a little hiatus while Ellie and Edmond took a vacation in Chicago! I heard they had a fantastic time and they’ll be posting pictures later in the week! Today let’s get to the Science Word of the Week!
Today’s word is Ungulate: an animal with hooves. Ungulates are mammals. They often walk on the tips of their toes that are covered with a hoof. Ungulates can have one or more toes. Their are many ungulates in the world. Here are just a few, including Edmond and rhinos! Tomorrow we’ll be celebrating Cinco De Rhino!

HAPPY WORLD TAPIR DAY!!
We’re celebrating some fun animals today! Tapirs are a bit odd looking with their elongated snoots and their hooved feet.
You might even think they are related to elephants, but they are not! Tapirs are in fact related to horses! Isn’t that cool! If you forgot that fun fact, you revisit our We Are Fanimaly!
Fun Tapir Facts:
- They have long prehensile mini trunks that are actually their noses and lips!
- Tapirs are herbivores.
- Tapirs are seed dispensers! They poop out the seeds of the fruit they eat and those seeds help forest growth.
- Tapirs are excellent swimmers!
- Tapirs live in South and Central America and parts of Asia.
- All four species of tapirs are endangered!
- Baby tapirs are covered in spots to help them camouflage!

We’re having a party for our planet today! This great big blue planet has so many amazing places and animals that we love! We work everyday to share those animals with you and share ways that we can all contribute to making the planet a better place for all animals and people!
Visit your local zoo or aquarium and learn about their conservation programs!
Turn off all power strips when not in use!
Unplug appliances when not in use!
Use vinegar and water as a cleaner!
Turn off the water when brushing your tusks!
Turn off lights when you leave a room!
Ride your bike to work!
Recycle! Recycle plastic, glass, aluminum and paper! Take electronics to a special recycling drop-offs!
Bring your own reusable bags to the store!

WE ARE FANIMALY!!
WE ARE FANIMALY!!
Hi everyone! We know that today is typically Science Word of the Week, but we have some big plans this week- including Earth Day and Save the Frogs Day, so we’d thought it would be fun to do a We Are Fanimaly, and we included Professor Tamandua!
That’s right, sloths and tamanduas/anteaters are related!
- Both sloths and tamanduas live in South America.
- Tamanduas/anteaters have long tongues to eat insects.
- Sloths are herbivores.
- Sloths live in trees and rarely come down to the ground.
- Large anteaters live on the ground, but tamanduas are climbers.
- They are both related to armadillos too as part of the Xenarthra family!
- They all have a unique backbone to help them support themselves when digging and climbing.
- At one point there was a giant ground sloth! Super cool!
- The origin of this family is around 59 million years old!
Who knew these amazing animals were related? We love sloths and of course tamanduas rank high with us too! Do you have a favorite Xenarthra?

Happy International Bat Day!! We’re celebrating this fun flying mammals with great fun facts and photos! Make sure to check out our Instagram account tomorrow for a fun How to Draw a Bat video!
- Fruit bats are essential for seed dispersal. When they eat fruit, the seeds are pooped out and that helps forests grow.
- Bats make up 25% of all mammal species.
- The largest known colony of bats is Texas. Millions of Mexican free tailed bats roost from May to October.
- Mother bats can find their pups in large colonies by scent and sound.
- Bat poop (guano) is used as fertilizer.
- Bat fossils have been found that are 33 million years old.
- Bats have five toes on each food.
- Don’t like mosquitoes? A brown bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes an hour!
- The smallest bat is the Bumblebee bat and it weighs less than a penny.
Wow! Bats are soooo amazing! They can eat pests and provide seeds for forest growth! We just love all of these flying mammals! Do you have a favorite bat species? We see the brown ones near the University of E&E!
