Warning! Frog!

We went looking for one neat little frog on our last day here in Costa Rica. Costa Rica has sooooo many amphibians! We found one of the famous poison dart frogs- the Strawberry flavored one- hahaha!

Strawberry Poison Dart Frog: 

  • These little frogs have warning coloration. Their colors vary on where they live.
  • They eat ants and termites give them their toxicity.
  • Strawberry dart frogs only grow up to around 3/4 of inch to an inch.
  • They are diurnal and tetestrial.
  • They are very territorial.
  • Strawberry poison dart frogs are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

 

We loved spotting these little frogs. They are definitely a look but don’t touch species.

Hello Large Lizard!

We are heading to the beach for the weekend and while we were there we met a really neat reptile! Come join us!

Black spiny-tailed iguana fun facts:

  • They are the largest member of the spiny tailed iguan family.
  • They are also considered one of the fastest lizards on earth. They can run up to 21 mph!
  • They have black scales on their long tails.
  • Males are larger than females and can grow up to 4 ft long.
  • These diurnal reptiles love rocky habitats. They hide in the crevices and bask in the sun on them.
  • Young iguanas are insectivores. As they grow older they are most herbivorous.
  • They are listed as least concern by the IUCN.

We sure are glad those lizards find the rocks to be comfortable, because they are not so easy to sit on. We prefer the sand. As fast as they are, maybe they should be renamed the flash iguana! Hehehe!

Next week we are meeting the animals who are out at night at camp. We wrote a little poem to get us in the mood!

Nature at Night

Just sit and listen to the sounds,

All around us animals are talking.

They tell their stories, sing their songs,

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

 

Just sit and listen to the sounds,

The crickets go chirp chirp chirp.

They can tell you the temperature,

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

 

Just sit and listen to the sounds

The owl goes hoooo, hoooo.

They sing in pairs through the woods,

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

 

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

The coyotes go hoooooooowl.

They howl at the moon,

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

 

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

The bullfrog go bellow, bellow.

They sing to the lady frogs all night long,

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

The bats go squeak, squeak.

They squeak while looking for eats.

Just sit and listen to the sounds.

The whip-poor-will goes whip-poor-will.

They sing all night long,

The animals make a beautiful chorus.

Dave the Daddy Long Legs!

Hi! I’m Dave the daddy long legs! I’m that familiar arachnid that everyone knows, but what do your really know about me? Well campers I’m here to tell you 8 great things about daddy long legs!

  1. I’m not a true spider! Yes, I am an arachnid, but I have one solid body and one pair of eyes. Technically I’m more closing related to scorpions.
  2. I belong to a group of arachnids who are called harvestmen. We get that name because we are spotted near the time of the harvest.
  3. We’ve been on the planet for 400 million years! You can find my relatives on every continent but Antarctica- we leave that cold place for the penguins! Brrrrrrr!
  4. I don’t have venom. So that old wives tail that I’m deadly but my fangs are too short is just a big ole lie, because I don’t have fangs either!
  5. There are around 6,000-7,000 known species of us harvestmen. We come in big and small sizes and let me tell you- some of us are wild looking!
  6. No- my legs do not grow back! So, please leave them on me!
  7. We are clean and tidy. After meals, we run our legs through our jaws to clean them! We’re the cats of the arachnid world! Hahaha!
  8. We’re not in to traveling. We live our whole lives in one small area. So no need to try and sell us a suitcase.

One Big Mollusk!

One Big Mollusk!

While snorkeling we came upon one big animal- the giant clam! And they are a sight to see! We had to share this amazing creature with you!

Location: Raja Ampat Islands

Giant Clam Fun Facts:

  • Giant clams live their whole lives in one spot on the reef. It’s hard to move 500 lbs of body.
  • They share their bodies with algae. They feed off the sugar and proteins the algae give off.

  • Each clam has a unique color pattern.
  • Giant clams have a siphon to pull in water in plankton.
  • They can not close their shell completely.
  • Giant clams can live up to 100 years!

 

 

We love these giant mollusks! Do you remember the largest land arthropod? We met them not to long ago! Mollusks are so amazing!

Give That Frog a Glass of Water

We had no internet yesterday! Darn-it! Well we spent that extra time looking for an unusual amphibian who calls the desert home! The water holding frog is soooo cool!

Water Holding Frog Fun Facts:

  • They have webbed toes.
  • Water holding frogs live underground.

  • When they bury themselves, they cocoon themselves in a mucus to protect themselves.
  • Water holding frogs eat that mucus when they emerge from their dormant state.
  • Water holding frogs can hold water in their bladder and send it back to their mouths to drink. They can also store in pockets under their skin!
  • They come out of their sandy burrows to mate during rainy season.

Woohoo! Animals have the neatest adaptation ever! Even if they seem kind of gross! Hehehehe!

Pinkies!

Pinkies!

We’re back- after having an internet issue out here in the Serengeti, we got our signal back. We headed off to meet some bright pink birds! Flamingos are always one of our favorites!

Lesser Flamingo Fun Facts:

  • Lesser flamingos have black edges on their wings.
  • They have deep red bills and crimson legs.
  • Flamingos have no sense of smell.

  • Lesser flamingos are famous for their group mating dances. These can include a few bird or up to several hundred.
  • Male and females incubate the egg.
  • Lesser flamingos travel around lakes to find food.

We had fun watching these fabulous flamingos dance around and eat. We love long legged birds and flamingos fit the bill. Hehehe!
