It’s Here!

We’re so very excited to share with you that the coloring book our Photographer drew and we helped do the research for is now on sale on Amazon. There are 50 pages of animals and their relatives and even those who may not have any relatives at all. There are some basics on classification, but wow we would need a text book to do that subject justice.

We hope it inspires you to learn more about animals and their relatives while have fun coloring! Oh and we recommend using colored pencils or crayons in the book so the colors won’t bleed! And as always THANK YOU for your support!

Jeepers Creepers

Jeepers Creepers

We are meeting a little frog that calls Lake Salamander. These little frogs sing their songs at night while we’re sitting by the lake. Luckily one little peeper hopped by to talk to us about spring peeper frogs.

Spring Peeper Fun Facts:

  • My calls usher in spring across the Eastern United States.
  • I am a member of a group of frogs known as chorus frogs.
  • I have pads on my toes that help me grip to surfaces.
  • Those pads help make me an excellent climber!
  • Like all frogs, I am a carnivore.
  • I like to winter in Florida, hahaha! Just kidding, I hide under piles of leaves and logs.
  • In the winter, I allow my body to freeze! Yep, bet you can’t do that!
  • I have a lovely X shaped pattern on my back.
  • You can hear our lovely chorus here!

Happy Frogs!

It’s World Frog Day and we are so happy to share some amazing amphibians we met at The Ampbian Foundation right down the road from headquarters! This amazing organization is working to protect frogs and other amphibians and reptiles from around the world! We met some amazing frogs the day we visited, including the gopher frog who the foundation raises and reintroduces in to the wild. Make sure you check out The Amphibian Foundations website & help them out! We’re all here for the frogs!

Watch Out for Flying Frogs

We headed off to meet an adorable amphibian today! They may be known to fly. We wonder if they wear capes? Hehehe! Let’s find out.

Chinese Flying Frog Fun Facts: 

  • These little 4 inch frogs call tropical and subtropical forests their homes.
  • They are arboreal.
  • They are also called Chinese Gliding Frogs.
  • They have webbing between their toes. That webbing allows them to glide from tree branch to tree branch.
  • They can glide up to 50 feet.
  • Females create foam nests for their eggs and attach to those on leaves above water.
  • They are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

We enjoyed spotting this little frog with the funny little feet! It makes us want to go hang gliding!

Greenhouse frog

Greenhouse Frog!

We headed out today away from the beach and in to the forest to find a little frog who is not native to Hawaii but was introduced from Cuba. These little amphibians are not east to find, but we were lucky and discovered a few.

Greenhouse Frog: 

  • These little frogs are only about an inch long.
  • They are carnivores. They eat ants, mites and spiders.
  • They lay their eggs in a membrane casing that the leave under logs or leaves.
  • They pass through their tadpole stage while in their eggs. When they are born they are frogs.
  • Their eyes are red.

Those are some peepers!

Those are some peepers!

After meeting the macaws yesterday, we ran into a small resident of the rainforest. These little amphibians are brightly colored with big red eyes. They also make you jump! Hehehe!

Red Eyed Tree Frog Fun Facts: 

  • The nocturnal species hide on the under side of leaves during the day.
  • If they are found- they flash those big red eyes and startle any predators!
  • They frog’s other bright colors- including orange feet and blue streaks protect them by confusing a predator’s eye with too much color.
  • These carnivores eat insects they find in the trees.
  • These arboreal amphibians are amazing jumpers! (Say that fast five times 🙂
  • They are not poisonous.
  • Red eyed tree frogs are listed as least concern.

We love these little frogs. They are so beautiful with their bright green eyes. That splash of blue on their legs make them the fashionistas of the rainforest. Hahaha!

Don’t Eat That Tomato

We went exploring in the forest last night. We were looking for a brightly colored frog. It’s been a while since we went on the hunt for amphibians, so it was a treat to find these guys. They weren’t hard to find, since it’s still frog breeding season and these little chippers are loud!

Tomato Frog Fun Facts:

  • Tomato frogs are bright orange or red.
  • They are brightly colored to warn predators that they are toxic. They secrete a white substance that acts like a glue.
  • Tomato frogs can also inflate when threatened.
  • They are ambush predators.

  • Tomato frog tadpoles are only 6 millimeters long when born!
  • Tomato frogs can live up to 8 years.

Tomato frogs are near threatened due to habitat loss and collection of frogs for the pet trade. While frogs make neat pets, it is best to get one from a breeder. Taking animals from the wild damages delicate ecosystems. Keep these tomatoes in the forest.

SAVE THE FROGS DAY!

Today is Save the Frogs Day! One-third of all amphibians are in danger of becoming extinct! So we thought we’d share 7 reasons why frogs are so awesome and therefore in need of protection!

FUN WITH FROGS- GLASS FROGS!

We’re meeting our last frog today- Seymour the Glass Frog!  Make sure to play I Spy with us tomorrow on Instagram or Facebook or Twitter! We’ll give you a hint- it’s a frog!

  • I get my name because the skin on my belly is translucent (see through).
  • You can see a glass frog’s organs through their skin! You can even see my beating heart!
  • Like many of my other frog friends, I am nocturnal.
  • We glass frogs are arboreal and like to call humid rainforests our home. You can find me and many of my cousins in Central and South America.
  • We glass frogs have a claim to fame- one of our species looks like the famous Kermit the frog! It is a honor to represent such a celebrity in the wild!
  • We glass frogs are not very big! We range from 1 inch to 3 inches long!
  • Male glass frogs are territorial. We like our own space.
  • Our big eyes face forward and not to the side like tree frogs!

We sure do love glass frogs! Who knew their were species in the world who like to show off their insides? It’s their cute faces that get us the most though!

FUN WITH FROGS- GOLDEN POISON DART FROGS!

Today we’re meeting Goldie the Golden Poison Dart Frog!

  • I live in a small area of rainforest in South America.
  • I am considered to be the most toxic frog on the planet!
  • Just one frog has enough toxins to kill 10 grown human men.
  • The native people in my rainforest have used my toxin for centuries as poison for their darts! That’s how we poison dart frogs got our name!
  • Due to habitat destruction, I am an endangered species.
  • My bright coloration is called warning coloration. It is an adaptation to ward off predators.
  • Scientists have developed a compound similar to my toxin that is a painkiller used for humans!

Goldie sure is a cool little frog. These small amphibians are brilliant to see, but from a distance! Haha!
