Knot Bird

We are so happy to finish our first week at Camp E&E at the Beach with more fun bird species! These little funny shore birds have an even funnier name- the red knot!
Red Knot Fun Facts:
- These gorgeous little birds have one of the longest migration routes on any bird. They travel from places like Alaska to Southern America.
- They are carnivores. They eat larva and Arthropoda.
- They grow up to 10 inches long.
- Red knots can double their weight before they migrate.
- One cool fact is like most migrating birds, they reduce the size of their digestive organs before they migrate.
- They are listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
We love these little birds. How cool is that they migrate soooooo far! That trip must be exhausting- hehehe!

Craft Day- Turtle Magnets
Craft Day- Turtle Magnets
Happy Craft Day! We’re making little wood turtle magnets out of wood! Hehehe! Come join us in the craft tent!
Materials:
Wood circles of different sizes
Markers
Glue
Magnet
Instructions:
1)Color all your circles- (you need 1 large & 5 smaller ones for feet & head)
2)Glue the circles together to make a turtle
3) Glue on magnet
There is your wood turtle! Make him whatever color you like! Add glitter! Jazz him up!

Not Really Made of Wood
We are meeting a creature that you often find sunning themselves on branches along the shore of Lake Salamander. These reptiles are called Wood Turtles- but guess what, they aren’t made of wood- hehehe.
Wood Turtle Fun Facts:
- These little turtles grow up to about 8 inches long.
- There scutes are slightly domed shaped.
- These omnivores eat fruit, leaves, insects and worms.
- Wood turtles thump on the ground with their feet to make earth worms come out of the ground. They then snatch up the worms.
- They are listed as Endangered by the IUCN.
- It is thought that their lifespan is over 60 years old.
These neat little turtles are losing their habitats. That’s why intact and clean habitats like our lake here at camp are so important.

Puffins!!
Puffins!
We headed to the coast line to meet one of the most iconic birds of Norway’s coastline- the Atlantic Puffin! These adorable birds are so much fun to watch. We wish one would come live with us the University.
Atlantic Puffin Fun Facts:
- These little handsome birds grow up to 10 inches long and can weigh up to 17 oz.
- They are nicknamed the “sea parrot”.
- These carnivores eat fish.
- Their brightly colored beaks are duller in color during the winter. They bright colors are brightest during breeding season.
- These sea birds spend most of their life at sea. They can swim under water using a flying motion. They can even dive up to 200 feet deep.
- In the air, they can fly up to 55 mph.
- Both parents incubate the egg and then feed the chick.
- They are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
These amazing birds form large breeding colonies. They breed in the same place every year. Scientists are not sure how the birds navigate back to the same place yet.

Armored Lizard

We decided we haven’t met enough lizards on our trip so far and headed out to meet one with some most interesting scales. This reptile was a definite look don’t touch kind of creature. Get ready to learn more about them.
Giant Girdled Lizard Fun Facts:
- They are also known as the sungazer lizard.
- Giant girdled lizards grow to about 7 inches long.
- Though they live in rocky areas, they do dig their own burrows for shelter.
- They are insectivores.
- They live in groups.
- They secret scents to communicate with other sungazers.
- Giant girdled lizards are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
We enjoyed spotting this little spiked lizard. It would be a smart predator to stay away from those scales.

We are feeling blue- just kidding! We’re off to meet one regal blue bird! In fact they are the national bird of South Africa! Are you ready to learn more about the blue crane? Let’s gooooo!
Blue Crane Fun Facts:
- These cranes can grow up to 40 inches tall and weigh up to 11 pounds.
- They are known for their loud honking calls.
- These omnivores eats grasses, seeds and small invertebrates.
- The males perform elaborate courtship dances.
- The entire population of blue cranes call South Africa home.
- Blue cranes are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
These elegant but funny looking cranes are so amazing. There are several organizations that are working to protect these neat birds, including the International Crane Foundation!

Doing Some Geometry
Doing Some Geometry
We headed out today with a local tracker to find a species that is critically endangered. We did find one of these special animals and we couldn’t wait to share more about them with you!
Geometric Tortoise Fun Facts:
- These tortoises grow put to 6 inches long.
- They have a geometric, radiating pattern on their shell that help them camouflage.
- These herbivores eat flowers, leaves and shoots.
- Once thought to be extinct, a small population (around 2,000-3,000) was found in the west cape of the country.
- They are thought to be aestivate (be dormant) in the summer.
- Females are larger than males, but have shorter tails.
- They are highly protected by the local conservation organizations and the government.
We were super excited to spot this little rare tortoise. They are shy, so we had to be very quiet and patient. We were lucky to have such a great tracker with us. We wonder who we might find tomorrow.
